For a more adventurous non package holiday why not try my mother’s house at
Watamu
on the Kenya coast.
The house stands on a high part of the plot overlooking the sea. It is approached by its own
drive
through 7 acres of indigenous African coastal forest with a soft path through the trees down to a long sandy beach. Vervet monkeys, suni (a tiny buck), a giant harmless nocturnal rat, monitor lizard, butterflies etc live in the forest. The long sandy beach is chosen by turtles to lay eggs and in the sea are coral and tropical fish. It a Marine National Park so you have to pay to go snorkeling.
The house sleeps 6 people in 3 bedrooms with a dining room and sitting room all attached to a long verandah. One bedroom has an en suite shower/bathroom and there is another shower with toilet. Self catering Kenya style,
Dixon
is the cook will bring you early morning tea, cooked breakfast, lunch and supper, he speaks English and has worked in a hotel so can produce a variety of dishes.
Kenga
looks after the garden and will do washing and ironing.
Ndaro,
the watchman, looks after the property at night. It is also connected to the Securicor system.
Watamu offers many tourist facilities. Hemingways is a top international class hotel and Ocean Sports is a friendly and relaxed hotel both could be reached by a 45 minute walk along the
sandy beach
or by car. All have tourist facilities available for deep sea fishing, scuba diving, windsurfing, snorkling, trips to
Mida Creek,
walks in
Arabuko-Sokoke
forest and can arrange visits to the world famous Kenya National Parks.
